Nighttime Hatch
Baby sea turtles usually hatch at night (When the sand is cooler and there are fewer predators around). They use a tiny egg tooth called a caruncle to break free from their shells.
Moonlight Navigation
Newborn turtles head toward the brightest light which is usually the moon reflecting off the ocean. Sadly, bright city lights can confuse them and lead them away from the sea.
Sprint to Safety
The race to the ocean is dangerous. Birds, crabs, and other predators try to snatch the babies before they reach water. Only 1 in 1,000 hatchlings will survive to become adults.
